In 2023, the European project BENEFIC comes to an end. Since the start in 2018, partners Flanders Region, Brussels Capital Region and the Netherlands have teamed up to accelerate the realization of infrastructure for environmentally friendly vehicles and vessels in the partner regions/country. Through three open calls for proposals, an additional number of 460 infrastructure points were deployed by public and private parties in 31 different projects, consisting of publicly accessible charging infrastructure (normal/fast/ultrafast), dedicated charging infrastructure (for busses and taxis), hydrogen infrastructure, shore power installations for inland navigation and natural gas infrastructure on or alongside the TEN-T core network. These projects were co-funded by BENEFIC for a total contribution of € 5 198 821. The results were presented during the closing conference, which took place on the 28th of November in Brussels.
BENEFIC is an innovative project both in terms of cross-border cooperation and the broad range of alternative fuels technologies involved. During the final conference, partners and stakeholders gathered to reflect on the conclusions and lessons-learned. Besides several presentations of infrastructure projects, the main conclusions and recommendations of BENEFIC were presented. To conclude the conference, a more broad perspective on alternative fuels policies, infrastructure deployment and financing was discussed in a panel discussion with representatives of DGMove and the Netherlands.

‘BENEFIC is coming to an end, but not the dynamic that the project has launched. On the contrary, thanks to BENEFIC and other projects, the energy transition in the transport sector is well underway. Now, we need to keep on working together to speed up this necessary climate transition as it is the only way to ensure a liveable and healthy living environment for the future generations in our cities’.
Alain Maron, Minister of Environment of the Brussels Capital Region
‘BENEFIC shows that regional and national governments can make a huge difference through good collaboration. BENEFIC was unique and also serves as a source of inspiration for many other governments in the future’.
Lydia Peeters, Minister of Mobility and Public Works of the Flemish Government
‘BENEFIC is a great example of a concrete, groundbreaking and successful project and acted as a flywheel to make electric driving more accessible and easier’.
Vivianne Heijnen, Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management of the Netherlands
BENEFIC is co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program of the European Union.
